In order to justify the statement that “water is a compound”, we must look at the definition and meaning of a compound itself. Once we are able to understand what a compound means, we shall be able to justify the statement.
In chemistry, we find that the definition of a compound is a matter which contains two or more than two but different types of atoms. When we investigate the chemical composition of a water molecule, we find out that it consists of atoms of hydrogen that are bonded with the one atom of oxygen. It is hence proved that water is a compound and not the element.
Water is made of two different elements that are hydrogen, and oxygen. Two atoms of a hydrogen element bond with a single atom of oxygen element. It is to be noted here that both hydrogen and oxygen are elements since both contain the same kinds of atoms.
